Student opportunities and activities

At Tweed Heads Public School, we offer a wide range of programs both inside the classroom and across the school to help students develop new skills, build friendships, and explore their interests.

Our programs include:

Extracurricular activities and programs

Students at Tweed Heads Public School enjoy a wide variety of extracurricular activities, spanning creative arts, sport, Bundjalung language and culture, and STEM. Many groups proudly represent our school in external competitions and events. Some examples are listed below.

Speaking Choirs

We have two fantastic speaking choirs, one for K-2 and one for Years 3-6, that perform at local Eisteddfods and community events.

Bundjalung Language and Culture Camp

Each year, we apply for up to 10 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Stage 3 to attend the Bundjalung Language and Culture Camp. This immersive two-night experience on Bundjalung Country allows students to learn the Bundjalung language and culture directly from local Elders and community members.

Student Representative Council (SRC)

Elected students from each class work together with staff and community members to improve our school and contribute to our local society. This program helps develop students' leadership skills. Initiatives run by the SRC recently include 'Wrapper Free Thursdays', redesigning our school bins and fundraising for local wildlife protection groups.

Compass Music Festival

Selected students showing enthusiasm and skills in the area of music have the opportunity to be a part of the Compass Music Festival in Coffs Harbour. They practise songs on the recorder with school staff before heading to the event to join with other schools in a group performance. This is a biannual event for our school.

Solar Boat Challenge

This is an annual competition for selected Year 5 students demonstrating skills and interest in the area of STEM. Students work in teams to design and build a solar-powered boat which they race against other schools during the transition day at Tweed River High School.

"I've always been impressed with the teachers, principal and culture of Tweed Heads Public School. There are so many activities available, in so many areas - it's more than I expect from a relatively small school. Our kids have been very happy there."

— Kate, a parent of Tweed Heads Public School

Clubs and activities

Our dedicated teachers host a range of clubs and activities for our students. These activities are optional and promote social and emotional well being at our school.
